In this course, students are introduced to industry-standard parametric modeling and mechanical design workflows using Onshape, a cloud-based Computer-Aided Design (CAD) platform widely used in engineering, product development, and manufacturing. Students learn how engineers design precise, editable parts by creating and constraining sketches, applying features, and building models that update intelligently as dimensions and constraints change. Through part studios and assemblies, students design components in relation to one another, model from technical drawings and real-world measurements, and simulate functional motion using mates and reference geometry. The course culminates in a Functional Mechanical Capstone Project, where students design, assemble, and prepare a dynamic, real-world mechanism for fabrication, reflecting professional CAD practices used in modern engineering careers.

Students Can Use These Skills For:

  • Designing precise, parametric mechanical parts and assemblies
  • Understanding how engineers model, test, and refine functional systems
  • Reading technical drawings and translating them into manufacturable designs
  • Building portfolio-ready CAD projects aligned to real engineering careers
  • Preparing for advanced CAD, robotics, manufacturing, and engineering coursework

Tools Used:

  • Onshape (Cloud-Based Parametric CAD Software)
  • Part Studios and Assemblies
  • Sketch Constraints and Feature Tools
  • Mate Connectors and Reference Geometry
  • Measurement and Dimensioning Tools
  • Export Tools for Manufacturing (.STEP, .STL)

Students Will:

  • Understand the fundamentals of parametric modeling and design intent
  • Navigate Onshape to create part files, drawings, and assemblies
  • Create and fully constrain sketches using professional constraint tools
  • Build parts using additive, subtractive, and intersecting features
  • Design components in relation to other parts using derived geometry and in-context modeling
